Condensation on windows occurs when the surface temperature of the glass on the inside of your home is lower than that of the humid air around it. The moisture vapour in the air changes into liquid water on contact with these cold surfaces. The more humidity in your home, the more likely you will experience condensation on your windows.

During the winter months most homes are heated between 20-22 degrees Celsius. When the temperature outside gets colder, the glass surface also gets colder, lowering the dew point (the temperature where humidity turns into liquid water or condensation). A humidity level of approx 30% is recommended, although this number can change depending on how cold it is outside.

The best way to avoid condensation on your windows is to control the humidity levels in your home. This can be done by increasing your homes ventilation and air circulation, running a fan in the kitchen and/or bathroom when cooking or bathing, and making sure your basement is well drained and protected against excess moisture.

It is a common occurrence to initially experience condensation after new windows have been installed. This is because new windows are sealing in the humid air, where before with older less efficient windows the humid air would escape, or more cold dry air would be allowed into your home.

Period properties in both the residential and commercial sectors are appreciated for their architectural beauty. Unfortunately, the beautiful old windows in those properties are usually lacking in energy efficiency. If they are the original single paned glass, they will have the lowest energy rating of any window available. That means they are doing little to keep out the cold of winter or heat of summer.

The U rating on windows relates to its ability to protect against outside temperatures. The lower the U rating, the more energy efficient the window is. A single paned window is generally rated at about 1.25, where a double-glazed Low-E window will having a U rating of around .46. A triple-glazed Low-E window will be even lower.

Buildings with windows that have Energy Star ratings, like those from Duraco, save between 7-15% on their energy bills compared to those buildings which have windows that do not qualify for the Energy Star rating. Better insulating factors in your windows also mean increased sound reduction.

Replacing your historic windows with energy efficient Duraco windows makes sense in more ways than one. Besides lowering your utility costs, Duraco windows can be custom made to fit your existing window openings. This means that you don’t have to lose any of the architectural beauty created by the older windows. You can improve your energy efficiency without losing any of the beauty in your period property.

If you have older windows in your home, you probably have experienced cold drafts around your windows during the winter time. You may even turn up your thermostat and still have cold spots near your windows.

Cold air drafts near windows can have two different sources. One can be outside air actually infiltrating into the home around the window. This is due to improper installation or improper insulating between the window and the framing. The other cause for cold drafts near your windows is the insulating factor in the window glass itself. When the warm air from your home hits the cold window pane, the air cools and drops to the floor, which creates the feeling of a draft coming off your windows. The lower the insulating factor in your windows, the greater cooling affect your windows will have on your indoor air temperature.

Replacing your old windows with Duraco’s energy efficient windows can eliminate both of these problems at once. Proper insulating during the installation will eliminate any drafts coming into the home, and our Energy Star insulated glass will keep your interior glass from cooling your room temperature as quickly. This means that you’ll not only feel warmer, but your heating bills will be decreased, as well. Use the Utility Savings Calculator on our website to calculate just how much you might be able to save on your hydro bill by replacing your windows with new Duraco windows.

Every Thursday at 12:30 pm, we are offering lunch and a full, guided tour of the Duraco factory to visitors who have reserved a spot on the weekly tour of our manufacturing facilities.

We are proud of the high quality product that we produce, and we want to share that process with the public. Many windows and doors can look the same from the outside, but it is what is inside and how those components are put together that makes the difference between one product and another.

The tour only takes about 25 minutes and ends with a light lunch that we will provide. During the tour, visitors will see exactly what makes Duraco windows and doors unique. They will see the whole process from beginning to end. You’ll be able to see what is inside our beautiful entry doors that make them an energy saver for your home. You’ll see how cladding is applied to our windows and all twenty-six colours that our customers have to choose from. Our friendly tour guides are very familiar with every aspect of the Duraco process and will be able to answer questions from visitors, as well.

Before each person leaves the factory, following their tour, they will also receive 100 bonus Air Miles reward miles as our thank you gift for visiting the Duraco factory. Air Mile reward miles are also given out to every Duraco customer when they purchase Duraco windows and doors.

We do request that visitors call ahead to reserve their spot on our Thursday tours, as the number of spaces each week are limited. You can call and reserve a spot for yourself or your group by calling 222-3388 during regular business hours.

If there has been one common complaint about maintenance free, clad windows over the years, it has been the lack of colour selection. White has been the standard color. Occasionally, window manufacturers have offered up to three or five colour selections for their cladding. If you wanted the convenience of maintenance free windows, you had to give up the versatility of colour choice that you had with unfinished wood windows. With Duraco windows, you don’t have to lose out on colour choice to have a maintenance free finish on your windows.

Duraco has TWENTY-SIX different colours to choose from for your exterior window cladding. We understand that one ‘green’ doesn’t fit all colour schemes, so we have four different greens to choose from in our Estate Colour Line. We have five bold Terra Cotta colours to choose from that turn your window frames into accent pieces on your home. Seven different shades of greys, tans and creams fill out the Natural Colours Line, and there are six Classic Colours that match many of the most popular siding colour choices. We even have silver and copper metallic cladding options for a truly unique finish on your windows. Black and white? Yes, we have those too.

Whether you want your window frames to match and blend with your siding or you want them to be one of your accent colours, Duraco windows allow you the creativity to design your homes exterior in a way that fits your personal style. Your windows don’t have to look just like everyone else’s, when you choose Duraco windows. You get the same durable, factory coated finish in any one of the twenty-six colours listed on our pallet.
